When St. Clair's girls varsity soccer team traveled to Madison Heights on Monday to face the Lamphere Rams, they knew they'd have their hands full. Lamphere was currently sitting in the first-place position of our conference, and we tied them 2-2 in our first meeting of the season.
The game proved to be exactly what our team expected -- a hard-fought game between two very strong teams.
The Saints struck first in the 22nd minute of the game, when sophomore Elia Tracy sent a beautiful corner kick into the box, right onto the foot of fellow sophomore Allison Champion, who finished the job by putting the ball in Lamphere's net.
But before the half expired, the Rams answered with a goal of their own, ending the half tied at 1 apiece.
The second half was much like the first, with a 40-minute battle of two giants. While both teams had opportunities to score, the impressive defense of the Saints and goalkeeping of junior Kara Donaldson ensured the Rams would not score again. However, the athleticism and speed of Lamphere's team prevented the Saints from scoring as well.
The game ended in a draw, bringing St. Clair's overall record to 5-3-4 and 3-0-4 in their conference.
St. Clair's next match is set for tonight against Port Huron at our home field with a 6:00 kickoff.
